Events | 31 May 2pm – 5pm Cream Tea Sunday

31st May 2026

A wonderful day for cream teas, cakes and refreshments served between 2pm – 5pm. Enjoy the reserve and nature at its very best. There are bees to butterflies and birds to beetles, and not forgetting moss, bark, reed beds and peeks at our beautiful river Thames and the vestiges of Samuel Saunders boatyard.

Teas are served from the Study Centre with seating in the Oak Grove. Remember to stop by the welcome shelter where you’ll find our Wardens, more information about the reserve and things to buy.

Celebrate the wonder of the Thames and the wildlife that call the reserve home with a fun, hands-on event for families and young nature lovers too! We are delighted to welcome children’s author and illustrator Emma Shoard for a return visit after last year’s successful event. Get creative with art activities inspired by her beautiful book ‘Life on the Thames’, taking young readers on a journey down the river from its source to the sea, and featuring a stop at Goring.

Discover the hidden world of chalk hill butterflies, dragonflies and the busy aquatic insects living along this magical stretch. Find out about different species, spot some creatures around the reserve and then get creative! Try drawing and collage techniques alongside Emma to make your own butterfly or dragonfly, make a cosy home for a caddisfly or enjoy some relaxing colouring. All materials and guidance will be provided.

Suitable for ages 5+ (Children must be accompanied by an adult.)

Activities: Create and decorate a butterfly or dragonfly (collage and drawing); Make a little house for your caddisfly (collage).

Entry to the reserve is free – but donations are welcome.

P.S. To protect wildlife and habitats, dogs (other than assistance dogs) are not allowed on the reserve. They are welcome at the study centre side if kept under control and on a lead.

The branches of a willow tree are just coming into leaf, with the branch tips grazing the water of the river Thames. There is a slight ripple in the water, from passing boats. A languid, spring day.
