Something has been afoot, or should we say underfo Something has been afoot, or should we say underfoot, at the nature reserve since we closed for autumn/winter. The installation of stage one of our new boardwalk by @kingfisherdecking is now complete! We are thrilled. It replaces a section of the old, worn out and too narrow boardwalk that was becoming difficult to maintain, and presented difficulties for wheelchair users and pushchairs and those with mobility difficulties. The new boardwalk has been made possible with support from the @mendthegap2024 programme and match funding from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) 'Access for all' project administered by @chilternsnl and @northwessexdowns. We'd like to thank Ricky and his team for their incredible work. Not only did they complete ahead of schedule 💪👋👍but they contended with THE wettest autumnal weather we think we have ever seen 🍂🌧🍁⛈ 🍂. We're now allowing the new boardwalk to bed in over the winter months. We hope you enjoy it when we reopen in the spring!

Autumn and winter tasks during our closed season c Autumn and winter tasks during our closed season continue apace. This is the Loddon lily compartment, scythed by hand, with the arisings stacked to one side, ready to be moved to another area on the reserve to gradually rot down. It's hard but satisfying work. Even the pitchfork needed a rest!

New things are afoot at Withymead! Shortly after s New things are afoot at Withymead! Shortly after serving our last August cream teas, we completed the first stage of our ‘Improvements to Access’ project. A new welcome shelter means we now have a better-defined starting and information point for visitors and greater weather protection for our wardens and volunteers. It replaces a well-worn and rusting gazebo that had to be erected every reserve open day. Phase one of the project also replaces half the length of the current boardwalk to give wheelchair access through a section of the reserve and an enlarged viewing platform adjacent to the existing kingfisher hide, replaces fencing, provides a new visitor entrance, and will help the Withymead team introduce new groups and people to the reserve. Made possible with support from the #MendtheGap @chilternsnl @northwessexdowns programme and match funding from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) ‘Access for all’ project, our 'Improvements to Access' project is one of our biggest building projects to date. The vision of the #MendtheGap programme is that the outstanding landscape that links the Chilterns and the North Wessex Downs will be enhanced for and enriched for wildlife, residents and visitors, helping to heal and soften the scars left by electrification of the Great Western main line. We'd like to thank everyone who visited us this ye We'd like to thank everyone who visited us this year. We have loved meeting you! A special mention also goes to our wonderful volunteers for their work around the reserve and serving (and baking!) refreshments. Thank you to you all for helping to spread the word about this special place by the Thames. We're now closed for the winter season. Though work on the reserve and behind the scenes never stops 😀🌿🌳🐾 Excitingly this means we can progress a big new project on site as well as continue our regular conservation tasks. More news coming very soon!
Visits can still be made out of season, by appointment only and subject to availability, and volunteers are always welcome. To get in touch, head over to our website www.withymead.org and use the contact form.
