Withymead Nature Reserve launches ‘Buy a Board’ Appeal

Help raise £115,000 for Phase 2 of our project to fully replace the entirety of our old, narrow boardwalk and footbridge and radically improve accessibility for visitors to the reserve.

Regular visitors will know that our boardwalk and bridge allow visitors to explore the unique plants and wildlife that call this environment home. A place where Thames-side boat building once thrived, it is a setting for joyful exploration and a sanctuary for all who seek solace in nature.

However, the last section of old, narrow boardwalk and bridge makes it difficult for people who use wheelchairs and pushchairs, and those with limited mobility to access the whole reserve. It’s impossible to walk side-by-side, or pass someone coming the opposite way. The structures are also near the end of their life from annual exposure to floodwater. They need to be replaced before they become unsafe for continued use. Without them, the site will have to close access to a significant part of the reserve. By replacing and improving this vital pathway, every visitor can experience the freedom and joy of being outdoors, without barriers.

Phase 2 of the project will provide a new 60-metre section of accessible boardwalk and a 13-metre long custom-designed ‘Bison bridge’, step free with a sloped entry/exit ramp and handrails, all made from recycled plastic for longevity and durability. Connecting to last year’s new section to reinstate the continuous loop through wetland reedbeds, visitors will be able to enjoy a circular walk through this special part of the reserve.

We have crunched some numbers and worked out that roughly 340 actual boards are needed excluding the bridge, which works out at approximately £158 per board. However, there’s no set donation amount; instead, you are encouraged to give what you can here. All donors who ‘Buy a Board’ can choose to be recognised on a wooden board located within the reserve, as well as on our virtual donor wall, giving public recognition of your contribution to creating a pathway for everyone.

We have a special message from Jenny, our outgoing Chair of Trustees:

“Phase 1 of the project made a huge difference in 2025. We welcomed many happy individuals and groups for whom Withymead was previously off-limits. We know that people who love Withymead and nature, will be keen to support a project that will help others to enjoy this green jewel as much as they do. The evidence for Phase 2 is clear: completing a fully accessible route around the reserve will transform the experience of all our visitors – particularly those with mobility issues or with young children. Your donation, of whatever amount, will help to make this happen. Thank you.”
